Most JAV is censored, but there's a smaller category of productions that isn't — and understanding why requires a bit of context about the legal framework that governs the mainstream.
Japan's Penal Code (Article 175) prohibits the domestic distribution of explicit material without pixelation. The key word is "domestic." Content produced for export and distributed internationally through overseas channels sits outside this restriction. Studios that want to reach international markets create what's called "uncensored" or "non-mosaic" JAV through subsidiary labels or overseas operations.
The distinction that matters: uncensored JAV is produced without censorship from the start, not stripped of it afterward. When you see "decensored" or "uncensored" versions of mainstream domestic titles online, those are fan edits — generated using AI tools or manual manipulation — not genuine originals. The underlying footage of a domestically-produced title is always censored at the source.
Uncensored titles represent a small fraction of total JAV output. They tend to come from studios that have established international distribution operations, often appearing under different label names than their domestic counterparts. The performer roster frequently overlaps with mainstream domestic production, but the scale is incomparable — if you want variety, the censored catalogue is enormously larger.
