Femdom JAV features women in dominant roles and men in submissive ones. That's the simplest description, but like most JAV genres, the reality is more varied than the label suggests.
The genre goes by several names in Japanese. 女王様 (joou-sama, literally "queen" or "mistress") is the most common umbrella term. 痴女 (chijo) overlaps with it but has slightly different connotations — where joou-sama implies formal dominance and theatrical ceremony, chijo leans toward aggressive, seductive pursuit rather than ritual power. M男 (M-otoko) focuses specifically on the submissive male perspective. These terms are used loosely and sometimes interchangeably in catalogues, but they do reflect meaningfully different aesthetics.
Japanese femdom JAV tends to be psychological in emphasis. The dominant performer is often elaborately costumed — the queen aesthetic involves leather, latex, high heels, and staged environments that look nothing like everyday life. But there's also a large slice of the genre that's deliberately casual in feel, where the dominance is woven into an ordinary domestic or workplace scenario rather than announced through costume.
Studios active in this space are spread across the industry. Some majors produce high-budget, heavily styled productions. Smaller independents sometimes produce more psychologically-focused or amateur-inflected work. Fans of the genre often develop strong opinions about which studios handle the dynamic well versus which ones are just going through the motions.
