Anime and hentai are two terms that get conflated constantly but have a meaningful distinction worth keeping straight.
Anime is simply the Japanese word for animation — all animation, not just adult content. Studio Ghibli, Evangelion, One Piece: all anime. The word carries no implication about audience or content rating.
Hentai (変態) in Japanese means "pervert" or "perverted behavior." It's used colloquially to describe people, not media. The word was adopted in the English-speaking world specifically to refer to explicit Japanese animated content — a usage that doesn't exist in Japan itself, where explicit animated content is usually called 18禁アニメ (adult animation) or エロアニメ (erotic anime).
Within JAV, the anime category covers sexually explicit animated content that follows conventions established by decades of mainstream anime: recognizable character archetypes, specific visual styles built around exaggeration and expressiveness, and fantasy scenarios that lean heavily on manga and game aesthetics. The visual vocabulary is shared with mainstream anime and manga — which is part of why it looks the way it does.
This category overlaps significantly with doujin JAV, since a large proportion of animated adult content is adapted from or inspired by fan-created works from circles that sell at events like Comiket.
